I read the Duran Duran book. Fun and nostalgic. Read the mix tape book. Heartbreaking and inspiring. You beautifully balanced the finding and loss of your wife with wonderful stories about discovering the connection with music in your early twenties. This book, however, is pure drivel. It is not only a repeat of your previous books, it is on an endless loop within itself. Yes, we know you were meant to be a husband instead of a boyfriend. YES, we know you're an Irish kid with Catholic guilt and whatnot and are a total tall lanky geek. We know you love cool indie hipster chicks with eclectic music tastes. It's obvious you think you hit the jackpot with an astrophysicist. Fabulous. Just. Stop. Repeating. Yourself. I am 78% percent through this book and have been literally forcing myself to finish it. The only other book I have been unable to finish is the latest Ellen auto-my-oigraphy and I berate myself for even purchasing it in the first place. This book actually rings with the same narcissistic, phone-it-in rant. I get it: you wrote a couple of good books, so why not punch this one out with a shadowy portrait of your new, improved wife/life? Have fun singing your karaoke. It's but a shallow imitation of life, like this latest submission.

Whenever I start reading a book, I always feel obligated to finish it. This is the only reason why I made it through this book in its entirety. I was really hoping to enjoy this book because it's about how music really influences the author's life, but I just never got into it.

Recommended by a colleague. This book was everything I wanted it to be and more. I use it in my personal, pedagogical, philosophical realms and encourage all kindred spirits who love karaoke and who love life to do the same.

It serves as great comfort to me when I go out on the karaoke circuit.
I love Sheffield's two previous books, so it was no surprise to me that I found his latest read engaging and entertaining. A fellow fan of karaoke, and fellow former patron of Sing Sing on Avenue A, I enjoyed reading his musings regarding one of my favorite late-night activities. If you don't like Sheffield's previous work or karaoke, I would skip this one, and if you haven't read any of his other books, I would table this book in favor of Talking To Girls About Duran Duran. But if you've read his other books and have ever had the time of your life singing about having the time of your life at the top of your lungs in a tiny room in k-town at 2 AM, you'll enjoy this one.
"In the karaoke universe," Sheffield writes, "we can be whoever we want. We express ourselves by turning into colorful and disastrous parodies of pop stars who are already appalling parodies of human beings, and somehow that's how we end up as our most sincere version of ourselves." This ethos of karaoke is the real subject of the book--more so even than Sheffield's personal story. If you're look for a memoir, keep looking. This is a silly, sometime poignant, soundtrack for a journey from sorrows to second chances. It should appeal to self-proclaimed music snobs. The writing is flat and prosaic, but Sheffield is immensely likable. What he lacks in craft, he in part redeems with undeniable charm.
I love Rob Sheffield. His writing on his love of music, even the really bad stuff, is nothing short of poetic. In him I feel that I’ve found a kindred spirit. I have read and re-read Love Is a Mix Tape Life and Loss, One Song at a Time so many times that I had to purchase a second copy. Talking to Girls About Duran Duran One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut is a go-to gift for friends. I am always thrilled to see him pop up as one of the talking heads on the VH1 music countdown shows. And I probably would have canceled my Rolling Stone subscription if it weren’t for him.

I just received my copy of Turn Around Bright Eyes The Rituals of Love and Karaoke and am half-way through. As always, I am digging Rob’s tapestry of humor and heart and cannot wait to see how it all turns out. Rob’s writing is fun, nostalgic and it is easy to relate to him. I cannot wait to finish this book.
Parts of this book made me laugh aloud, parts made my eyes tear up, and other parts made me wish that part was over already ( I admit it-I skimmed those parts!). My favorite sections were the ones about the Beatles, 9/11, Rod Stewart, Rush, his parents, and Ally. My least favorite parts included references to bands I just don't know (which isn't Sheffield's fault) and the parts that were overly repetitive, especially early on. I found the organization quite scattered, sometimes with clear transitions between chapters, and other times no indication the current chapter was even connected to the previous one, or sometimes, even the book itself. I really would give 3 1/2 stars if it was available.
