A clever plot twist, Rosie’s distinctive voice, and an intriguing cast of characters make Chasing Augustus a delightful, often heart-wrenching, and not-to-be-missed story. Plus, I love a good dog story and this one really touched me. Highly recommended for strong middle-grade readers, for reading aloud, for book group discussions.

Had hopes for this one.
Turns out was not right fit for my daughter at all.
The story idea I liked but the reading of this one was a struggle for me to stay with.
I found the character not overly likable.
I have read plenty of stories with young angry/mean girls but found something that drew me into their struggles.
This one did not do that for me so I thought was just my own issues.
Gave it to my daughter who also found it hard to get into this one. She really disliked the attitude of the young lady.
I did keep reading it because it started out interesting enough but as I kept going found it to just fizzle by the end of it.
Rosie is a gritty girl dealing with challenging life situations; her mother left, her father had a stroke, and no one seems to understand or respect her. The one source of connection she had left, her dog Augustus, was given away. This book is the twin stories of Rosie’s search for her dog, which leads to connection with some caring adults, as well. Do be aware that this story has dark aspects; I suggest reading it yourself before sharing it with younger children.

The writing style is a bit rough and gritty, as is Rosie. The style may help bring readers into Rosie’s experiences to a greater degree. Rosie might well be label difficult by some, but she is responding with self-respect to those don’t listen or sympathize with her. Just because important others don’t want to connect with the real Rosie doesn’t push Rosie into changing who she is.

The mystery of where Augustus is, as well as what is happening in Rosie’s life, will pull readers into the story. Rosie’s experiences with Augustus show parallels with Rosie’s experiences with some of the adults in her life and offers her insight.
Rosie - Rosalita to her estranged mother - is coping with her papa's stroke and his absence, living with her curmudgeonly grandfather, and the loss of her beloved dog, Augustus. "Chasing Augustus" is Rosie's story of learning to cope with the curveballs life has thrown at her and accepting that she is worthy of being loved. Kimberly Newton Fusco allows Rosie to narrate her adventures as she seeks "Gus" whom her mother gave away without Rosie's knowledge. Having abandoned Rosie and her papa when Rosie was a baby, her attorney mother seems to be a heartless, self-centered individual. As the story progresses, she becomes less unpalatable, but never engaging or warm.

Rosie is a feisty, a "wild child". Using some unconventional and disgusting tactics, she defends Swanson, a local woman, from the town bully. She repeatedly disobeys her grandfather as she looks for Augustus. Saving Rosie from herself, Philippe, a foster child, and Cynthia, a prissy neighbor girl, work together to help Rosie accept friendship and each other.

The first person narrative brings Rosie alive and highlights her emotional devastation as she seeks Augustus and as she comes to terms with her papa's physical condition and her grandfather's personality. Language is appropriate for most readers - Rosie uses antiquarian phrases to swear - and the book is not a difficult read. The story moved well, although toward the end, it seemed to slow noticeably. I liked the positive outcomes for Rosie and for other characters; they were each believable and satisfying.
The story introduces you to Rosie and her town, grandfather, neighbor's and townspeople as she shares her experiences during her sixth grade summer. The author chose to write the story as an 11 year old narrating her own story through her eyes. You get to meet her tough, marine grandfather and the neighborly foster mother with many troubled children.

Rosie shares stories of her life in the previous year before her "papa" had a stroke. He was a single dad who ran his own donut shop in a very odd town that is filled with grit and sand. She shares the love they had for each other, the books they read, the swear words they made up and the dog they shared. Then her story changes to her rough present life, the one where her dad is in the hospital, her "mum" gives away her dog, and her grandpa agrees to care for her. This is where she turns to a very mean little girl who snaps at everyone who comes in her path.

She refuses to do anything except look for her dog. The story continues to follow her through all the tough spots she gets into while she searches for her "Gus". It's amazing how much growth a young person goes through in just one summer. The author takes her time letting you learn to feel for Rosie. It's enlightening to see Rosie grow up and stop being so selfish by finally experiencing empathy for others.

Great story for the middle school crowd, especially since many of them are also struggling with "adult" feelings. Especially when Rosie's tutor helps her through this rough patch by suggesting she write in a journal, it shows you how important it is to "feel" and realize that writing is a very good prescription for delving into your feelings.

At the end of the story, you see Rosie learns to cope with her feelings and finds a better, happier person shine through.
It is a Christmas gift. No way to tell.
