This was my favorite of Catherine McKenzie's books. It is a multilayered story, which grows in complexity as it progresses. The backdrop is a forest fire which threatens a small town. Having lived in Southern California, I dreaded fire season much more than I ever feared earthquakes. These acts of nature or sometimes arson are terrifying yet beautiful. Ms. McKenzie perfectly captures this paradox with her description of the unique colors of the sky and the smoke that can travel for many miles, lending an ethereal view of one's surroundings. And she perfectly chronicles the mounting fear that everyone in the path of a forest fire experiences.

The protagonists, Elizabeth and Mindy, had formerly been best friends before a hurtful exchange of words destroyed their relationship. I immediately fell in love with Elizabeth. What a complex character she is. Her passion in life is something I never understood: she loves fighting the fires. With her marriage in tatters after she asks husband Ben for a divorce almost out of the blue, the situation changes when they are forced to relocate because of the fire. Ben seems as confused as I was when she was unable to resist the challenge of firefighting. Despite lack of communication and another major hurdle, Ben and Elizabeth, when not bickering, seem to love each other. The divorce is Elizabeth's idea, but her heart pulls her in one direction while her mind pulls the other way.

Mindy, now part of the in-crowd, is obsessed with her two children. When Elizabeth, also an arson investigator, determines that the fire was set, Mindy's world turns upside down. Her teenaged son has been acting strangely for months and suspicions fall on a group of kids who sneak out at night and are known to hang out near the origin of the fire. Mindy and her husband have their own suspicions, and she irrationally blames herself. She spends her life striving for perfection and has few coping skills when things go awry.

What an ending the reader has to look forward to! I usually pride myself at guessing what comes in the last chapter, but Catherine McKenzie completely fooled me. Smoke is a book of action, strange relationships (I never quite figured out Ben, for example), trust, mistrust and mystery. What else could I ask for!

Smoke Catherine McKenzie 9781503947214 Books Reviews

I was reluctant to read this book - I kept thinking who wants to read about a fire? I'm so glad I decided to give it a try, as it's a great story. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down!

This story weaves suspense around a fire in the mountains that threatens to burn down a town, a relationship that's struggling to stay afloat, and a group of teenagers that just may have started said fire while engaging in typical teenage mischief.

The characters in this story are developed very well. There are many relationship twists and turns along the road to a great conclusion.

I highly recommend this book. It's definitely a page-turner with relationship drama and thought-provoking situations that really make it hard to put down. I'm a little bummed out right now that it's over, that's how much I enjoyed this story!
Even though I've loved everything I've ever read from Catherine McKenzie, I wasn't sure I was going to like this one. I think the "fire" theme put me off, but I was so wrong. I was as immersed in this novel as all the others before it. The author has a way of writing characters that the reader comes to know and care about. She puts "real" characters into somewhat unbelievable circumstances, although in this case, it wasn't all that far fetched. I loved that the book was equal parts women's fiction and mystery with a little romance thrown in. I must say I was completely vested in Elizabeth and Ben's story right out of the gate. Loved it. It's official. I don't think this author is capable of disappointing me. I hope I didn't jinx myself...
The circumstances for SMOKE is a forest fire which threatens a small town. The main characters are Elizabeth Martin and Mindy Mitchell. At one time they had been best friends before "The Falling Out" which in effect destroyed their friendship.

Elizabeth has an unconventional passion in life she loves fighting fires. For some reason she just can't "let go" of anything relating to fires. It's in her blood, it's what she lives for. Ben, her husband, just can't understand why she is unable to resist the challenge of firefighting. Despite the lack of communication plus another major hurdle, Ben and Elizabeth, when not quarreling, seem to love each other. But with their marriage in bits and pieces, Elizabeth asks Ben for a divorce.
The divorce is Elizabeth's idea, but her heart pulls her in one direction while her mind pulls her the other way. Out of the blue, their situation changes when they are forced to relocate because of the fire that is threatening the small town in which they live.

Mindy is trying to be of the in-crowd and is obsessed with her two children. When Elizabeth, who is now an arson investigator, determines that the fire was set, Mindy's world turns upside down. Suspicions fall on a group of kids who like to sneak out at night and are known to hang out near the source of the fire. Her teenaged son has been acting strangely for months. Could he be hanging out with that group of kids? Was he there when the fire was set? Mindy and her husband have their own suspicions and she blames herself.

Catherine McKenzie perfectly chronicles the mounting fear that everyone in the path of a forest fire experiences. She creates beautiful wooded mountain pictures decorated with trails of multi-colored smoke in her exemplary writing. SMOKE is a multilayered story which grows as it progresses. It is a book of action, strange relationships, trust, mistrust and mystery. What an ending, you the reader, has to look forward to! I usually try to guess what may come in the last chapter, but this time I was completely off base.
